Anyone Thankful Gizmodo Has Gobbled Up io9?

Being that I’m writing this before Thanksgiving, and that no ETA is given for when the merge will happen, I’ve opted for a holiday-themed headline for this news because why not, really:

Via Comics Beat

Will any geeks news sites be left standing as 2015 draws to a close? I would have thought io9, the nerd part of the Gawker media empire, would have been the safest, but I guess it couldn’t pull its weight as a standalone brand, and has just been folded into Gizmodo, the massively huge and popular tech blog.

So am I thankful Gizmodo has gobbled up io9? No. I’m sad to see that io9 won’t remain as its own brand. What I’ve appreciated about io9 is the attention it’s given authors and novels, regardless if they covered traditionally published books or self-published ones. Mainly, I’ve always turned to io9 as a solid source of TV, Movies, and Comics news, so finding it as a “section”of the Gizmodo brand will be an adjustment. It’s disappointing but I’m glad io9 will still have a presence that will hopefully remain  strong!

Mashable’s Break Down Of “The ‘Avatar’ Social Media Relaunch”

The sequels to James Cameron’s Avatar won’t arrive until 2017, but the series’ social media feeds are evidently already relaunching this week in advance, according to Mashable. This apparent social reboot spans Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, SoundCloud and Facebook.

Mashable has a very handy rundown of the social media outreach that’s planned:

Avatar on Tumblr: As Mashable notes, it’s all about the film’s visuals. This currently includes concept art, from rough pencil sketches to detailed paintings and CG models.

Avatar on Pinterest: Since Pinterest is geared toward “pins”, which are posts containing images and text, the film’s Pinterest page looks to be geared as a visual encyclopedia for the series.

Avatar on Facebook: According to Mashable, the series’ Facebook page will “become a hub where content from all the aforementioned Avatar social channels can be found, with standalone posts and announcements.” The page has 54 million fans, and it’s current post links to Mashable’s article, tipping off its followers to keep tabs on their social media feed update.

If you’re a self-publisher, definitely check out Mashable’s article in full and get a feel of what type of content Avatar’s ‘social team’ has put together for their different social feeds. Note that it’s Tumblr page is “behind the scenes” driven, whereas their Instagram page will “teach basics of the Na’vi langage from the film” if you’re into getting schooled on that side of the mythology.

All in all, Mashable’s full article is a fantastic rundown of how to approach content created for social feeds. It’s a very informative piece and is definitely helpful in brainstorming how to approach a content plan for your marketing efforts on your book.

Speed Drawing #3: Scarlet Witch (The Avengers: Age Of Ultron)

Welcome to the latest installment of The Weibcomics Speed Sketch featuring SCARLET WITCH from Marvel Comics’ The Avengers: Age of Ultron! Scarlet Witch, The Avengers, Ultron, and all related characters and indicia are property of Marvel Comics and Disney, 2014.

I drew this piece based on the Scarlet Witch concept art Marvel released last week. In recent set photos from the upcoming sequel’s shoot, her outfit is slightly different, but I opted to go with the concept art design as I thought the white dress would go well with the rest of the colors in her outfit. I referenced what her stockings and boots looked like in the stock photos but streamlined them. Continue reading “Speed Drawing #3: Scarlet Witch (The Avengers: Age Of Ultron)”
